The term 'chemical peel' can sound alarming, but today's formulations are precise, controlled, and tailored to every skin type. Here is the complete guide.
The phrase 'chemical peel' carries an outdated reputation for dramatic downtime and dramatic results. In reality, modern chemical peels are extraordinarily precise. At Glowra, our Bespoke Peel protocol is formulated individually for each client's skin — and the result is controlled resurfacing with predictable, manageable recovery.
Types of Chemical Peels
Peels are categorised by depth of penetration into the skin: superficial, medium, and deep. The vast majority of clinic peels fall into the superficial-to-medium category, targeting the epidermis and upper dermis respectively.
- Superficial (AHA/BHA): targets outer epidermis. Minimal downtime (24–48 hrs). Improves texture, glow, and mild pigmentation.
- Medium (TCA 15–35%): reaches the upper dermis. 3–5 days peeling. Addresses deeper pigmentation, fine lines, and acne scarring.
- Deep (phenol): full dermal penetration. 1–2 weeks recovery. Reserved for severe photoageing — performed under medical supervision only.

Before Your Peel: Preparation Protocol
At Glowra, we provide every peel client with a preparation protocol 2 weeks in advance. This typically involves daily application of a low-concentration retinoid, SPF 50 every morning, and cessation of any active exfoliants (AHA, BHA, retinol) 5 days before your appointment. Primed skin responds more evenly and heals faster.
“A chemical peel is only as good as the skin it is performed on. Preparation is the most important step — and the most commonly skipped.”
— Dr. Eleanor Voss, Medical Director
During the Treatment
The peel solution is applied with a brush or gauze in a controlled pattern. You will feel a moderate tingling or warmth that peaks at around 2 minutes and subsides quickly. The entire in-clinic portion takes 30–45 minutes including pre-cleanse and neutralisation.
After: The Recovery Phase
- Day 1–2: skin appears flushed or tight. Apply your prescribed barrier cream liberally.
- Day 3–5: peeling begins. Do not pick, peel, or exfoliate. Let it shed naturally.
- Day 6–10: new skin emerges — brighter, smoother, and more even in tone.
- Day 14+: full results visible. Avoid active exfoliants for a further 2 weeks.
